CORTE MADERA, CALIF. -- Italian dinnerhouse chain II Fornaio has roiled out a North Beach Diet menu, the restaurants' response to the low-carb craze.

Named for the San Francisco neighborhood that is the heart of that city's Italian community, the diet emphasizes whole grains, complex carbohydrates and vegetable-based dishes. The menu includes bread, pasta and wine, and consists of meals that would provide about 2,500 calories a day, according to II Fornaio.

The menu was introduced in late September to the 24-unit chain's Passport Members, frequent diners who can earn a trip to Italy as consumers of a complete slate of II Fornaio's monthly "culinary expeditions" of regional Italian food.
